The Moka Clinic and Malabo Health Initiative
The Moka Clinic & Malabo Health Initiative is an active project which The Ladybug Project undertakes in Malabo City and Moka Village on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea. This initiative is one of the only non-corporate, NGO healthcare initiatives in Equatorial Guinea and is also the only aid work which reaches out to the island's healthcare professionals.
This project aims to: - Renovate the Moka clinic (serves approximately 400 people) to higher safety standards. This clinic does not receive outside aid and is in severe need of updating. Mold/mildew are a major problem for the facility, in addition to the roof, which is not structurally sound. It is the only healthcare facility for this region. We have already donated numerous administrative and healthcare supplies to the facility, in addition to custom-built shelves intended for medicine storage. - Build up the country's first continuing education program for healthcare professionals. At the moment, there is no medical training facility in Equatorial Guinea and most of the country's healthcare practitioners are undertrained or are expats working in Equatorial Guinea for short periods of time. This continuous education program would also make an effort to reach rural professionals, and would offer emergency medical training, as well as refresher courses on basic non-emergency care. - Provide medical supplies when possible (sterile gloves, bandages, IV materials, and other one-time use items), as well as plastic storage bins (to protect items from the humid climate), and other items as requested by the nurse. - Collect landmark data on the current state of healthcare in the country (mostly unavailable for the country) and publish/disseminate nationally and internationally. |
We are actively accepting supply donations for this initiative; our expected budget is approximately $50,000 for the next 1 1/2 years. Our impact from this project will be approximately several hundred health workers, as well as the populations that they serve (population: 150,000). To donate, please click here.
